The Farm Report -- 7/9/2019

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Monday 8 July
Box Scores

AAA: off

Games resume Thursday. I expect the Pacific Coast League to surpass last year's home run total on Friday, not quite two-thirds of the way through the schedule. Seven of 16 teams have already exceeded last year's total, and eventually they all will. Under the modern PCL format (1998-present), the 1999 Omaha Spikes own the season record with 231. Four clubs in 2019 are on pace to hit more.

AA: at Frisco 14, Corpus Christi (HOU) 1
Record: 6-11, 4.5 GB, 39-47 overall

SP Ronald Herrera: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 SO, 7.99 ERA
RP Demarcus Evans: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1.62 ERA
RP Joe Barlow: 2 IP, 0 R, 2 SO, 1.20 ERA
DH Preston Beck: 1-5, HR (10), walk, .255/.345/.441
1B Andretty Cordero: 3-5, .273/.311/.419
LF Ledarious Clark: 2-4, double, walk, .214/.265/.388
2B Yonny Hernandez: 2-4, triple, walk, .321/.424/.429

After some recent lopsided defeats that included consecutive mound appearances by infielder Ryan Dorow, the Riders were able to experience the fun side of a blowout. Corpus hurler Tommy DeJuneas couldn't retire any of five batters in the 8th and suffered the indignity of being replaced on the mound by the DH mid-inning. Even with the ever more common sight of position players pitching, I don't recall seeing that.

Hooks' starter Cristian Javier hadn't allowed a run through 1.2 but was pulled with a lofty 56 pitches. Yonny Hernandez greeted reliever Willy Collado with a two-out bases-loaded triple.

Rehabbing catcher Isiah-Kiner Falefa was 2-4 with a walk, and Kyle Dowdy struck out one in a scoreless inning.

High-A: Down East 3, at Myrtle Beach (CHC) 1 (6)
Record: 11-8, tied for 1st, 61-28 overall

SP Noah Bremer: 4 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 3.41 ERA
RP Jefferson Medina: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2.37 ERA
CF Julio Pablo Martinez: 1-3, HR (9), .228/.301/.409
DH Curtis Terry: 3-3, double, HR (4), .369/.417/.677
2B Josh Altmann: 2-3, double, .205/.373/.308

In a rain-shortened contest, Curtis Terry didn't get an opportunity for a triple to complete the cycle.

Down East needs a 28-23 finish to set the franchise record for best winning percentage in high-A, which began as a separate classification in 1990. The 1993 Port Charlotte Rangers were 84-49 (.632) and featured Rich Aurilia, Danny Patterson, and a bunch of guys who made it but didn't really pan out (Dan Smith, Hector Fajardo, etc.).

Low-A: off, 41-25 overall

Short-A: at Spokane 5, Tri-City (SDG) 6
Record: 14-11, +1 G

Next report: Wednesday

Rookie: Rangers 7, Padres1 1
Record: 12-6, +0.5 G

Next report: Friday

Wei-Chieh Huang threw a rehab inning, his first in six weeks. In the midst of his best results with the Rangers, he came down with back stiffness.

Jose Trevino has been rehabbing in Arizona for two weeks. He was optioned in March and isn't on the 60-day IL, so his situation doesn't impact the 40-man roster.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
Players used by Round Rock during the season:
2011: 58
2012: 51

By season's end, that number would be 79.

Four of the rookie club's 16 games had been suspended by rain, a power outage, wind, and lightning.

Today's Starters:
AAA: off
AA: Jonathan Hernandez
High-A: John King
Low-A: TBD, Tyree Thompson is next in line
Short-A: Leury Tejada
