An announcement: I have been invited to bring my baseball writing to the staff of The Athletic as part of the imminent launch of The Athletic Dallas, and I’ve agreed to join — and enthusiastically so.
In the coming days, The Athletic will open for business in DFW, with a really exciting roster of local writers covering the Rangers, Cowboys, Mavericks, and Stars — without ads, without pop-ups, and without clickbait. It’s a site that will deliver in-depth sportswriting, in this market and more than a dozen others, plus national coverage that, in baseball, features the great Ken Rosenthal.
I certainly didn’t take this move lightly, as the Newberg Report is months away from hitting its 20th anniversary as a standalone. But I’m really excited about The Athletic — and was a subscriber before this opportunity presented itself — and am honored that the folks there believed I’d be a worthwhile addition to the team.
There are two things I want to add.
First, I will elaborate on all of this soon, in a piece that I will publish both at The Athletic and at NewbergReport.com, but thereafter my work (with some exceptions, such as Newberg Report event announcements and the occasional offbeat entry) will be published exclusively by The Athletic.
Second — and this is important — Scott Lucas will continue to deliver his unparalleled minor league reports both to the Newberg Report mailing list and on NewbergReport.com. We are not shutting the website or the mailing list down. Scott’s terrific work will be unaffected, and you will still get to read his stories all season long.
Here’s a special offer for 30% off and a free t-shirt to join me over at The Athletic and keep reading mine as well. You’re the reason I keep writing, and without you guys I would have never found an opportunity to write alongside such an exciting group of local and national sportswriters as part of a really bold, smart, innovative paradigm — with a refreshingly clean aesthetic.
Hope you’ll come on over.
