The Farm Report -- 4/16/2017

Rangers Farm Report: Games of Saturday 15 April
Box Scores

AAA: Round Rock 7, at Iowa (CHC) 6
Record: 5-5, 1 GB

SP Eddie Gamboa: 6.1 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 6 BB, 2 SO, 5.11 ERA
SS Doug Bernier: 2-5, 2 doubles
CF Jared Hoying: 2-5, HR (2)
1B Ronald Guzman: 3-4, triple

Guzman narrowly missed a homer to dead center and settled for three bases.  He's tallied 13 triples over the course of the previous two seasons, more with his bat than his feet.  Gamboa looked pretty good when I saw him in person last week, but control was clearly an issue last night.  The knuckleballer threw 107 pitches, a number I can't imagine anyone else in the system reaching this early in the season.

AA: Frisco 5, at Springfield (STL) 6
Record: 4-5, 2 GB

SP Reid Garrett: 4.1 IP, 8 H (2 HR), 6 R, 2 BB, 3 SO, 13.50 ERA
LF Scott Heineman: 1-3, 2 walks, 2 SB (4)
2B Andy Ibanez: 2-5, double
CF Jose Cardona: 2-3, double, walk

After his numerous earlier achievements, Heineman led off the 9th by taking a called strike three and getting ejected for his troubles.  Nevertheless, Heineman leads the team in OBP (.459), hits (11), walks (5) and steals (4).  Frisco trailed 6-0 early but made it interesting.

High-A: at Down East 4,Salem (BOS) 11
Record: 6-4, 2 GB

SP Wes Benjamin: 4 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 6 SO, 9.82 ERA
C Chuck Moorman: 4-4

Moorman didn't hit well in Hickory last year and has a career line of .214/.270/.291 across six seasons, but he's sure found high-A to his liking (.462/.500/.538 in seven games).  His teammates combined for five singles.  On the mound, Benjamin allowed six extra-base hits, although none left the yard.

Low-A: at Hickory 1,Kannapolis (CHW) 3 (7)
Low-A: at Hickory 1,Kannapolis (CHW) 0 (7)
Record: 5-6, 2 GB

SP Edgar Arredondo: 5 IP, 10 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 9.95 ERA
SP Sal Mendez: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 4 SO, 0.00 ERA
RP Reid Anderson: 2 scoreless IP, 1 H, 2 SO
3B Ti'Quan Forbes: 3-6, HR (4)
DH/RF: Yanio Perez: 2-6, double

With the league's graces, Hickory and Kannapolis scheduled a doubleheader to have Easter off.  I don't remember another one in all my years on this beat.  Mendez through five very strong innings in the nightcap.  Hickory local Mark Parker, who knows all things Crawdad, has a nice feature on Mendez (under "An intriguing arm").

Forbes has tied last year's four homers.  He's repeating Hickory after a mixed-bag 2016: three very trying months (.232/.292/.285) followed by two better ones (.271/.326/.392). Forbes is Texas's top remaining pick from the 2014 draft since Luis Ortiz departed for Milwaukee.

Kannapolis used only two pitchers, neither of whom reached 80 pitches.

Five Years Ago Yesterday
6.1 scoreless innings from Frisco's Justin Grimm, 3 from Myrtle Beach's Wilmer Font, and a homer and two singles from Hickory's Rougned Odor.

Today's Starters:
AAA: Tyler Wagner
AA: Collin Wiles
High-A: Brett Martin
Low-A: off
