The Farm Report -- 9/15/2009
California League Semifinals, Game 3: at Bakersfield 7, San Jose 3
Win: Kennil Gomez
San Jose leads best-of-five 2-1

Kennil Gomez allowed 13 baserunners (six hits, six walks, a Gomez error) in 6.2 innings but only one crossed the plate. Gomez struck out five, and San Jose generously hit into two double plays and had a runner caught stealing during his outing. Blaze starters have permitted just two runs in 19.2 innings against the Giants.

The bullpen bent without breaking on Monday. Reliever Ryan Falcon stranded two of Gomez’s runners to complete the 7th but was pulled after beginning the 8th with two doubles. During the regular season, Falcon faced 104 left-handed batters and gave up three doubles. In two playoff appearances, he’s yielded the same number of doubles to lefties in just six at-bats. Both doublers would score.

In the 9th, pitching for the first time in eight days, Evan Reed escaped unharmed despite allowing two walks and a single. He fanned Connor Gillaspie, who represented the tying run, to end the game.

The Blaze offense pummeled Eric Surkamp, who pitched very well for low-A Augusta but was making his Cal League debut. Mike Bianucci smacked a two-run homer as part of a four-run 1st, and Mauro Gomez’s two-run shot the following inning increased the lead to 6-1.

Tonight, Tanner Roark squares off against Texas A&M alum Kyle Nicholson (2.83 ERA between Augusta and San Jose).

World Cup:

Justin Smoak homered twice and drove in five in yesterday’s 11-1 pasting of Netherlands Antilles. Smoak is batting .444/.500/1.389 with five homers in four games.

Kasey Kiker tossed four innings of one-hit, one-run ball with seven strikeouts. Having not pitched in real action for 19 days, Kiker was pretty wild, walking five of 17 batters faced.

Elsewhere:

Last night I dreamt that Brett Tomko pitched his 100th career win and second shutout. When I woke up, my pillow was missing.
